We feel that filmmaking is a collaborative art and since that's a huge
part of what appeals to us we decided to work as a group from the very
beginning.
We were drawn to stories that have a very real and natural feel so
we've developed the script by creating an outline and then improvising
the scenes in rehearsal. We then went back and used the improvisations
to improve the story and dialog.
This way the script benefits from everyone’s real experiences, points
of view and contributions and we were able to create a good, simple,
interesting story with compelling characters and themes.
I've read several articles and have listened to commentaries that have
hinted at processes of other filmmakers so I know there have been
others that worked in a similar way. Unfortunately, I have not been
able to find a definitive description of their methods so we came up
with our own. If anyone knows of a serious 'how to' resource for
collaborative / improvised script writing. Please let me know.
I'm really happy with the way it came out. The script is so
multifaceted its prismatic. We are going to film it using a
combination of natural/reality based and computer assisted filming
techniques so it will have some very interesting shifts from 'reality'
to fantastical scenes. But more on that next time.
